Colorado River

We love saving water

Did you know that compared to dairy milk, Silk® is a water-saving choice? That got us wondering how else we might help protect our planet's waterways. So we've signed on as a charter sponsor of Change the Course: a campaign to restore flow to the Colorado River Basin.

Did you know that compared to dairy milk, Silk® is a water-saving choice? That got us wondering how else we might help protect our planet's waterways. So we've signed on as a charter sponsor of Change the Course: a campaign to restore flow to the Colorado River Basin.

An issue that’s close to our hearts—and close to home

The Colorado River originates right in our backyard and winds almost 1,500 miles before reaching its destination in the Gulf of California. Because we work and play near the Colorado, we’re keenly aware of its importance in sustaining aquatic ecosystems, irrigating crops, generating hydroelectric power, fueling industry and, of course, providing us with nature’s perfect playground.

But today the Colorado River Basin is under tremendous stress, and many waterways that used to flow freely year-round now stand dry for portions of the year. In fact, the once-mighty Colorado doesn't even reach the sea.

We’re helping to Change the Course

Silk is partnering with the National Geographic Society, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Participant Media to support Change the Course—a multiyear global effort to conserve freshwater and preserve the ecological health of the Colorado River Basin.

With support from Silk and other sponsors, Change the Course will fund water conservation projects throughout the Colorado River Basin, with the goal of turning the tide on the health of this majestic North American waterway.

We can’t do it alone

Restoration projects are crucial, but ultimately the health of our water supply comes down to each of us using less. As part of Change the Course, the National Geographic Society has created a water-use calculator and pledge system encouraging individuals to cut back on day-to-day water use.

Shorter showers, water-friendly landscaping—even choosing Silk over dairy milk—can all add up to gallons saved over the long term. What steps can you take to help save the Colorado? Check it out and get inspired!

Making an impact, drop by drop

Creating meaningful changes in the Colorado River Basin won’t happen overnight—but it will happen right before our eyes, as Change the Course reports back on the progress of restoration projects. We’re excited to share updates along the way—stay tuned!
